Ora Eldon "Buck" Holloway was born on January 21, 1917 near Eagleville
in Harrison County, Missouri, to Uriah and Ethyl (York) Holloway. As a
young child, he attended the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints and
the High Point School. After school, he farmed with his father before
joining the United States Army on April 24, 1941, at the age of twenty-
three. He served as an automotive mechanic during World War II before
being discharged on January 22, 1946.
Buck returned to farming and on February 3, 1948, was united in marriage
to Helen Hartman in Jackson, Minnesota. Five children were born to this
union: Sharon, Patricia (Pat), Sandra, Becky, and Bill. If Buck
wasn’t planting or harvesting, he was fishing. He took most of his
grandkids and sons-in-law fishing and remembered fishing stories even
as he became ill.
Buck served for eight years as a Shelby County Supervisor, loved animals,
especially horses, and enjoyed his coffee group and Sunday breakfasts.
He was a proud member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, and the Masonic Lodge for many years.
Buck died on Monday, September 1, 2008, at the Manning Regional
Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-
one years, seven months and eleven days. He was preceded in death by
his parents and his brothers: James, Robert, Fred and Tom.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Helen Holloway of Irwin, Iowa;
his children: Sharon and her husband Ken Crouse of Panora, Iowa, Pat
and her husband Steve Gawley of Irwin, Iowa, Sandra and her husband
