Said She was a pious, lovely christian woman. She died 25th July 1807, aged
76...they lived very happily. (Caleb Swan went from Boston to her funeral) Dr.
Morse performed the funeral Service.

My Grandfather was a devout religious man...every morning after breakfast,
after reading a Chapter in the Bible, he made a prayer...standing behind his
high back chair.

He lived in a large house in Charlestown Square. when the town was burnt by
the British troops at the battle of Bunker Hill 17th June, 1775, the inhabitants
dispersed to the neighboring towns. He went with his family to Concord.
When the English army evacuated Boston March 1776, he returned, with the
other inhabitants, and built his house near "the Neck", between the main
road, and the West Side of Bunker Hill, with a pleasant garden in front where
he lived until his death in August 1808, aged 88.  The house and barn are still
standing in good preservation (1864-1868) though surrounded by modern
houses.

The new mown hay used by the Americans for a breastwork in the battle
(between two lines of rail fence) was mowed on his land the day before the
battle. (D.S.) He had a fine orchard of Apple trees on the slope of bunker Hill,
which were all cut down by the British troops for fuel, the following winter.
(D. S.) He said his Father was an only child, and therefore that he himself had
neither Uncle, Aunt, nor cousin.

That his father had been a dissipated man, and was disinherited by
his
father, who was rich, and he could not therefore give his Children so good an
education as he had himself (H.S.)

He had 2 or 3 Slaves who were freed by the law of Massachusetts about 1780,
one was a young woman said by sister Hannah to be very handsome,...one a
man, wanted to come back if he did not like being free. he told him no, he
must decide now; he might remain if he chose, but if he left, he could not
come back. after some time, he finally concluded to go.
