Insertions
[obit]
Mary Catherine Campbell was born July 9th, 1848: died November 18th, 1917,
at the age of sixty-nine years, four months and nine days. She was the
daughter of Thomas and Susan Campbell, and was born in Alleghany county,
Pennsylvania, where she lived until twelve years of age. She then moved with
her parents to Jefferson county, Iowa. On November 23, 1870, she married to
George A. Benton, with whom she has since traveled life's journey to its end.
To this union were born four children, who are: Susan, wife of Robert Abbott,
now residing at Hayes, South Dakota; Effie, wife of Louie Dierenfeld, jr.; and
Dillman E. Benton, both residents of West Side, Iowa. The fourth child, Sarah,
died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Benton lived in Jefferson county, Iowa, for five
years after their marriage, then moved to Elwood, Ia., where they lived twelve
years. From Elwood they moved to West Side in October 1887, where they
have since lived. Mrs. Benton was a member of the Congregational Church in
Jefferson county, Ia.
Mrs. Benton was taken sick last February and while she improved in health
during the summer months, she did not entirely recover. With the coming of
the fall months complications, due probably to old age, caused a return of her
illness and finally her death. The body was taken to Maquoketa, Iowa to be
placed in the vault of the Benton family.
Mrs. Benton was ever a faithful and loving wife and a kind mother. She leaves
a place in the hearts and affections of her family that no one can fill. Besides
her husband and children there are left to mourn her departure nineteen
grandchildren and two brothers. The brothers are: William P. Campbell of
Packwood, Iowa, and Thomas Campbell of Bidwell, Ia.
The community also mourns the loss of one of its oldest citizens and tenders
the bereaved family and relatives its sincere sympathy in this time of sorrow.
Card of Thanks
We wish to express our sincerest thanks to our friends and neighbors, who so
kindly assisted us during the illness and death of our beloved wife and mother
George Benton and family.

Popular Businessman Claimed By Death
Monte J. Campbell, a resident of Westside virtually his entire life, passed
away at his home early Saturday morning, after an illness of several months.
During the last month he had been bedfast. Carcinoma was the cause of
death and his condition had been recognized as hopeless for the past several
months.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the
Presbyterian church with Rev. E. E. Zimmerman, the pastor officiating. Louis
Malloy sang "When I Come to the end of the Long, Long Road" and "A Perfect
Day," He was accompanied by Mrs. H. E. Evers. The casket bearers were M. C.
Buton, John Schumann, James Killeen, George Neumann, Herman J. Buck, and
L. C. Thiedeman. Burial was in the Westside cemetery.
The large concourse of friends and relatives who came to attend the last rites,
and which overflowed the capacity of the church building, bore mute testimony
of the regard and esteem felt for Mr. Campbell in the community.
The Westside Ford agency of which Mr. Campbell was part owner, was one of
the oldest Ford agencies in this section of the state. It was most fitting
therefore that the funeral cortege was made up largely of late Ford model cars.
Life Sketch
Monte J. Campbell was born March 18, 1873 and passed away at his home at
the age of 63 years and 1 month on April 18, 1936. Mr. Campbell was a native
Iowan, He was born at Low Moor, Clinton County, Iowa, and came to
Westside in 1877 with his parents and spent the remainder of his life here.
Not many people grow up and continue to live in one place as many years as
did Mr. Campbell. For nearly sixty years Westside had been his continuous
residence. He went to school here and being young at his father's death made
himself what he was. He was a member of the town council for several years
and for many years fire chief. For a number of years he was a member of the
school board; all of which offices he filled with merit. Though he did not
journey far away he went far in helping to develop and maintain the town
which was his almost life-long home. He knew no other home.
On October 24, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Kusel. They
went to housekeeping in Westside and lived continuously here, toiling
together in devoted consecration to each other. To this union two children
were born - Ethel and Paul, both at home.
He was not a member of any fraternal or social organization but was always
interested in the things they stood for and contributed of his time and money
to help toward the welfare of the community.
His first business venture was in a blacksmith shop with Henry Wiese as
partner. A few years later he entered into partnership with Dr. C. L. Patterson
in the hardware business, and in 1908 the firm began to deal exclusively in
automobiles in which business he prospered. Through his business and long
residence in the community he had a wide circle of friends who continue to
praise him for his integrity and straight forward dealings.
He was a faithful husband and father. He loved his home and lived in faithful
performance of the duties that devolved upon him as a father and husband.
He was friendly to the public and courteous in his dealings with people.
Mr. Campbell enjoyed good health until about two years ago when he
submitted to an operation in the Carroll hospital. Since then he had been in
failing health and early in January became confined to his home where loved
ones and medical skill did all that was possible to make him comfortable and
to prolong his life if possible, but the end was near and he rests, for death
came as his only relief.
He is survived by his wife and two children Ethel and Paul, and four brothers -
George of Westside; Scott of Boone; William of Lawton; and Frank of Boone;
Two sisters preceded him in death.
His many friends extend sympathy to his loved ones.

Card of Thanks
We wish to express our most sincere thanks to the many friends who were so
kind and thoughtful during the long illness of our husband and father, and
who with their visits and flowers and numerous other courtesies contributed
much to his peace of mind and comfort during those trying times. We also
wish to thank everyone for their assistance at the time of his death and all
those who assisted in the services and those who sent the beautiful floral
offerings.

Died
Mrs. Ambrosia Abbott:-At her residence in Jackson township, on Thursday,
January 11, 1894, of paralysis of the heart, aged 35 years, 7 months and 10
days.
Mrs. Abbott had been quite ill with the prevailing complaint, la grippe, but
was so nearly recovered that she was able to assist in the household work,
and on Thursday was helping at the family washing when she complained of a
peculiar feeling, as she expressed it, "as though half her body was dead." She
seemed to recover from this stroke and, after supper, was about to retire
when she suddenly fell to the floor and shortly expired. Thus suddenly was
the husband bereft of his life companion and four children deprived of the
tender care of a loving mother, the eldest of these a daughter about fifteen
years of age, just beginning to improve after a period of six weeks' illness,
and the youngest a child about two years old. The funeral services were held
on Saturday at the family residence, Rev. D. P. Day of the M. E. Church
officiating, after which the interment took place at the West Side cemetery.
The sympathy of all is extended to the sorrowing family in this great
bereavement.
