Gerard Beekman, Jr. Bible

Holy Bible in Dutch; Dordrecht, Jacob en Pieter Keur, 1714.

Contains the family record of Gerard Beekman, Jr., and his descendants
through his daughter Effie who married Philip Ver Planck in 1761. Some
earlier Ver Planck records torn from an earlier Bible are pasted in. The Bible
in son owned by William Gordon Ver Planck of New York City who is the
great-great-great-grandson of Gerard Beekman. Part of the records are in
Dutch and have been translated by Dr. L. Bendikson.

[The Dutch character ij is not cut for fonts of English type. Therefore the
letter y has been used in the Dutch records where ij is meant]

Anno Domini 1693, June 10th: Born Gerard Beekman Jun'r, son of Gerard
Beekman, baptized at Midwout by Domine Varick; as sponsors his uncle
Hendrickus Beekman and his honourable housewife, living at Kingston Esopus.

Anno Domini 1696, December 2nd: Born Anna Maria van Hoorn, daughter of
Gerrit Van Hoorn, baptized at New York by Domine Salyn; as sponsors her
grandmother Provoost and uncle Sanford.

In the year Anno Domini 1718, October 12th both the above mentioned
parties Gerard Beekman, Jr. and Anne Maria van Hoorn are united in
matrimony by the very learned and reverend Hendrickus Boel, minister at New
York.

Anno Domini 1719, on Tuesday, July the 21st, between 11 and 12 o'clock in
the day-time, my wife was brought to bed with a son, who on the 29th of the
same month is baptized by Domine Gualtherus Du Bois, minister at New York;
as sponsors Father Gerrit van Hoorn and his honourable housewife.

Anno Domini 1720, on Friday, December the 9th about ...o'clock at night my
housewife was brought to bed with a daughter, who on the 14th of the same
month is baptized by Domine Gualth. Du Bois, minister at New York; as

Anno Domini 1722, on Friday, December the 7th about one o'clock in the
morning, my housewife was brought to bed with a son, who on the ...of the
same month is baptized by Domine Boel, minister at New York; as sponsors
brother Cornelius Van Hoorn and his housewife. Christened Cornelius.

Anno Domini 1724, on Sunday, September the 13th about 5 o'clock in the
morning, my housewife was brought to bed with a still-born son.

Anno Domini 1725, on Saturday August the 21st, about 9 o'clock in the
morning my housewife was brought to bed with a daughter, who on the 27th
of the same month is baptized by Domine Gualtherus De Bois minister at New
York; as sponsors brother William Beekman and his housewife Magdalena.

Anno Domini 1725, on Monday September the 6th about 9 o'clock in the
morning, my dear and beloved housewife died in the Lord, in the age of
twenty-nine years, less three months.

Anno 1704, October the 8th, born Catharina Provoost, daughter of William
Provoost, baptized at New York by Domine Du Bois; as sponsors Cornelius
Van Exveen and Gerrit van Horne's housewife.

Anno 1727, on Saturday, June the 10th I, Gerard Beekman, am united in
matrimony with the above mentioned, Catharina Provoost by the learned and
reverend Rynhert Erickson, minister at Hackensack.

Anno 1728, on Friday, March the 29th about noon, my housewife, above
mentioned, was brought to bed with a son, baptized on the 3rd of April by
Domine Boel, minister at New York and christened William; as sponsors
father Provoost, and grandmother Byvanck.

Anno Domini 1729, on Sunday, March the 16th, about midnight my daughter
Magdalene died in the Lord, after a lingering malady, in the age of three
years and seven month, less five days.

Anno 1730, on Wednesday, March the 25th, about 5 o'clock in the morning,
my housewife was brought to bed with a daughter, baptized on the 9th of
April by Domine Du Bois, minister at New York, and christened Magdalena; as
sponsors brother David Provoost and his housewife.

Anno Domini 1731, on Tuesday, September 7, about 11 o'clock at night, died
in the Lord my second daughter, called Magdalena, about 17 months old.

Anno Domini 1732/33, on Tuesday, January the 8th, about 3 o'clock in the
morning my housewife was brought to bed with a son, baptized on the 16th
of the same month by Domine Boel, minister at New York, and christened
David; as sponsors brother David Provoost and his housewife.

Anno 1735, on Monday, March the 10th about 8 o'clock in the evening my
housewife was brought to bed with a daughter, baptized on Wednesday the
19th of the same month by Domine Du Bois minister at New York, and
christened Magdalena; as sponsors brother William Beekman and his
housewife. [in the margin:] "Magdalen married Abm. Lynsen of the City of
New York, Merch[an]t." "Deceased ye 20 Sept'r 1783 and buried at Fishkill."

Anno 1736/7, on Wednesday, February the 16th, about 10 o'clock at night, my
housewife was brought to bed with a daughter, baptized on Friday the 25th of
the same month, by Domine Du Bois, minister at New York, and christened
Effie; as sponsors brother La Roux and his housewife.

Anno 1738/9 on Friday, March the 16th, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, my
housewife was brought to bed with a daughter, baptized on Wednesday the
21st of the same month by Domine Hendrickus Boel, minister at New York
and christened Catharina; as sponsors brother Erickson and his housewife.

Anno 1740/41 on Sunday, January the 18th, about 10 o'clock in the evening
my housewife was brought to bed with a son, baptized on Wednesday the
21st of the same month by Domine Du Bois, minister at New York; and
christened Joacobus; as sponsors brother Hendrickus and sister van Dam.

in the morning my mother was delivered of a boy Whome died 4 days after he
was born on thursday between one & two a Clock afternoon being the 28 day
of the Same month.

Annoq Domminiee 1742 On Thursday being 23rd day November about half
hour after Eleven at night my Father Gerard Beekman Departed his life aged
forty nine years 5 months & 13 days.

Annoq Domini 1746/7 on Wednesday Morng being the 28th January about Six
a Clock our Sister Cathrine Departed this Life & was Intered in the Old Dutch
Church ye 30th Inst. G. GB.

Annoq Domini 1746/7 on sunday morning being the 8th day of February about
Ten a Clock Our Brother James Departed this Life & was Intered in the Old
Dutch Church ye 10th Instant. G. GB.

Anno 1757 Satterday 26 Febry my Daughter Magdalen was Married to Mr. Abm
Lynsen Junr son to Mr. Abm Lynsen Merchant.

Anno 1758 Tuesday 15 August my Daughter Magdalen was Deliv'd of a Dauger
& Named her Catharine her god Mother Cathr Beekman & Cathr Lynsen & her
god Father Abm Lynsen Crisned in the Old English Church by...Barely Crisnes
15 days after it was born on a Wednesday.

Anno 1761 Satterday the 7th of Aprill Philip Verplanck Jun Son of Philip
Verplanck Esq was married to Miss Effie Beekman Doughter of Mr. Gerard
Beekman of New York.

Anno Dom 1765 on Monday the 21 day of Aprill my Wife Effie was delivered of
a Doughter and was Crisend by Domney Rubell att the Manor of Cortlandt and
was Crisend Cathren Philip Verplanck Es'r & Gertrude Verplanck Stands God
Father and God Mother. November 4 1786 She married Herman Hoffman Esq
of Red Hook.

Anno Dom : 1766 on Tusday the 26 of Augs my Wife Effie was Delivered of a
Doughter and was Crisend by Domeny Isaac Rysdick at Fish Kills and was
Crisend Gertruy. James Verplanck Esq God Father ans sister Gertruy
Verplanck as God Mother. March 8 178/9 married Anthony A. Hoffman Esq. of
Poughkeepsie.

Anno : Dom: 1766 my Mother Gertruy Verplanck wife of Philip Verplanck Esq
Departed her life the 20 : Sep. 66.

Anno : Dom : 1767 My sister Margret Verplanck Dep't Her Life in Nov'r.
Intered at the Manor Cortlandt.

Anno : Dom : 1768 the 8 Day of July my son Philip was born on Monday
Morning at 3 oclock & was Crisend by Domeny Ruble of Longisland at the

oclock at Night Was Cresened by Domeny Rise Dyck of fish Kills and was
Crisend In my one House God Mother Anna Mary Verplanck & Johanes
Verplank God Father June 15 1799 Married Peter Mesier Junr son of Peter
Mesier of Fishkill Town.

Anno Dom 1771 Departed this Life Octob 13th day Philip Verplanck Esq of the
Manor of Cortlandt and was Entered at the same place Aged Seventy-seven
years and Three Months & fifteen days.

Anno Dom 1763 Departed the Life in April 20 our Mother Catharine Beekman &
was bur'd in the Old Dutch Churuch aged fifty nine years 5 months & 18 days.

Anno : Dom 1773 On Tuesday the 19th of Oct. my Doughter Anna Mariah was
borne and Crisned by domeny Rysdyk at Fish Kills David Beekman & Sarah
Beekman his wife Stand as God Father and God Mother. April ye 22 1797
Married Andrew Deveaux of So. Carolina.

Anno Dom 1774 On Monday ye 14 Feb. Brother John Verplanck Departed this
Life, of the Manor of Cortlandt and Enterd at the same place. the 17th day
Ageid -- years.

Anno Domini 1774 on ye 30 December departed this Life James Verplanck Esq
& was interred in the Manor of Cortlandt, N. B. James & John Verplanck dyed
without Issue.

Anno Domini 1777 at half past twelve at night of Friday the 20 June departed
this Life Philip Verplanck & was buried in the Dutch Church Yard at Fish Kills
in Rumbouts precinct - near his deceased wife Effie Verplanck who departed
this life on the 15 November one thousand seven hundred & seventy five
aged thirty nine years.

Ano Domini 1779 on Wednesday the 20th October departed this life Anna
Maria Verplanck Eldest surviving daughter of Philip Verplanck Esq of the Manor
of Cortland aged 50 & was buried in the Dutch Church Yard at Fishkill in
Rumbout Precinct.

Translation of a Dutch Record taken from a Dutch Bible which formerly
belonged to Gulian Verplanck the elder of the City of New York, Merchant, and
which now is the property of George Brinkerhoff of Hopewell Rumbouts
Precinct, Dutchess County, State of New York, late of Newtown on Long
Island.

Anno 1668 10-20 June at New York in America, I, Gulian Verplanck aged
Thirty-one years the first of January Married Henrica Wessells aged twenty
three years in September last. The Ceremony was performed by the Reverend
Samuel Driesyas.

Anno 1669 About four O'Clock P.M. of Thursday the 16-26 December, our first
child being a son was born, and the Sunday following the 19th of December
Christened by the Rever'd Mr. Driesyes his Name Samuel. His Sponsors were
Nicholas Rackers, Johannis Van Bruggen and my Mother Mary Verplanck.

Anno 1698 on the 20th November Samuel Verplanck dyed at sea ona voyage
from Coracoa to Jamaiaca and is buried on the Island of Jamaiaca.

Anno 1671 on Friday Morning about nine o'clock of the first day of December,
my second Son was born, his name James his sponsors my father Abraham
Verplanck and Anna Elizabeth Wessells.

Anno 1699 on the 30th October James Verplanck deceased and is buried in
the Church.

Anno 1674 in New Orange -- I. E. Albany at one O'clock in the Morning of
Saturday the 3 - 13 Jany. was born our third child and christened on the 24th
of the same month his Name Abraham Sponsors Stephanus Van Cortlandt
Francis Rumbouts and my wife's sister Joanna Edsalls.

Anno 1695 on the 7th of June Abraham Verplanck sailed on the Brothers
Adventure as mate for Newfoundland. He went from thence on the 18th of
July but has since never been heard of.

Anno 1675/6 about 10 O'clock at Night of Thursday the 23rd of March our
fourth Son was born and baptised on Sunday the 26th being Easter his
sponsors Sam'l Edsall, Warner Wessels and Samuel Edsall's daughter, Anna
Edsall.

Anno 1676 about 11 O'clock in the forenoon of Friday the 14th July our fourth
Son Named John John dyed and on Sunday the 16th after Sermon was buried.

Anno 1677/8 March the 17th Old Stile being Sunday our fifth child was born
and Wednesday following the 20th of the Month Christened Benjamin his
sponsors Garret Roos Abraham DeLanoy and Judith Edsall wife of Benjamin
Bleg.

In New York
Anno 1678 on Sunday the fourth of August old Stile about Six O'clock in the
afternoon our son Benjamin deceased and was buried on the 6th of the same
Month.

Anno 1680 on 2nd September old Stile Thursday at one o'clock in the morning
my daughter was born and on Sunday the 5th of September Christened her
name Anna her sponsors David Schuyler, Peter Dila Noye and Gertrude
Schuyler wife of Stephanus Van Cortlandt.

Anno 1684 on the 23rd of April my father deceased of a fever and
Imposthume in the Ear and was buried on the 26th of the same Month.

Anno 1684 on Monday the 22nd June was born our eighth child Named Gulina
her sponsors, Peter Jacobson's Mauris, Hartman Wessells and Elizabeth
Bedlow.

Anno 1701 on the 30 November Gulina Verplanck deceased and on the 4th of
December was buried in the Church.

The foregoing was copied and translated on the 7th of June One thousand
seven hundred and Eighty-six as Witness my hand. Sam'l Verplanck.

N. B. By the testimony of Mary Brockhurst daughter of Saml Verplanck the
Elder her aunt Anna Verplanck deceased in the year 1702 having married
Teller. Sam'l Verplanck.

Anno 1691 on the 8th Sept. O. S. I Jacobus Verplanck was married to
Margarita Schuyler of New Albany by the Rev'd Goodwirkies Delius Minister of
New Albany.

Anno 1693 the 28th March my son Guilliaum was born Stephanus Van
Cortlandt and my brother Brandt Schuyler Godfathers my mother Kipp
Godmother and dyed in Dutchess County the 6th June 1745.

Anno 1695 the 28th of June my son Philip was born Coll: Peter Schuyler and
Coll: Jno Schuyler Godfathers Mrs. Gertrude Cortland Godmother departed this
life the 13 day of Oct 1771 aged 76 years 3 months 15 ds.

Mother Collins - Dyed Augt. 23rd, 1726.

January 4th, 1720/1. My Son Jacobus Verplanck was born - John Collins and
Gulian Ver Planck Godffathers and Mary Van Renselaer Godmother.

June 23rd, 1729. My Daughter Anna Marya was born - Uncle Barnard ffreeman

Novembr. 9th 1731 My daughter Gertruy was born - Uncle Philip Van cortlandt,
Esqr. Godffather and Aunt Gertruydt Beekamn, Godmother. Deceased the
24th June 1794 Interred at Fish Kills.

June 20th 1734 My Daughter Catharin was born - Unckle Samuel Bayard
Godffather and Margaret Bayard Godmother. Deceased Septr. 1804 Interred
at Fish Kill.

1736 August 30th My Son Philip was born - Couzn. Gulian Verplanck
Godffather and Cousn. Anna Verplanck Godmother.

1768 July 18 day at 3 o'clock in the morning my grandson Philip was born - My
selfe God Father and my Daughter Anna Maria Verplanck Godmother.

Anno Domini 1798 July 12 William Beekman Verplanck was married to Melinda
Gordon the only daughter of the Honl. James Gordon of Ball Town in Saratoga
County.

Anno Domini 1799 July 22 My Daughter Mary Ann Catherine was born and
christened by Nicholas Van Vranken, minister of the Dutch Churches in Fish
Kill Town. W. B. V. P.

Anno Domini 1801 October 12th My son William Gordon was born and
christened by the Revd. Nicholas Van Vranken. W. B. V. P.

Anno domini 1804 Jany. 22nd Our son Philip Alexander was born and
christened by the Revd. ____Bartello. M. Verplanck.

Anno Domini 1804 July 19 departed this life Mary Ann C. Verplanck and was
buried in the Dutch Church Yard at Fish Kill. M. V.

Anno Domini 1804 Decr. 30 departed this life Willm. B. Verplanck and was
interred in the same grave with his daughter Mary Ann Catherine in the Dutch
Church Yard at Fish Kill. Melinda Verplanck.
